Richard Michael R. ‘Richie’ Fernando, was born on February 27, 1970. Went to Ateneo de Manila University where he graduated with a Development Studies degree. It was at the Ateneo where Richie received his “calling” to live a life of service to God and others as a priest. As part of his regency, he was sent to Banteay Prieb or “The Center of the Dove” in Cambodia. There he taught the physically handicapped that would enable them to contribute to the community. On October 17, 1996, one of Richie’s student came to school for a meeting. The student was angry and took a hand-grenade from his bag, and was about to throw it into a classroom full of students, Richie grabbed him and accidentally dropped the grenade. It exploded, killing Richie. Everybody else in the classroom was unharmed, even the student. At just 26, Richie had given his life to save his students.
