Synopsis

Dr. Raymundo Santiago Punongbayan was the former director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS. During his stint at PHIVOLCS, he saved thousands of lives during the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991.

For his contributions to science and to his country, Punongbayan received awards from national and international organizations, including the Unit Award for Excellence of Service granted by the United States Department of Interior in 1991; the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction in 2001; the Sergey Soloviev Medal of 2003 from the European Geophysical Society for his exceptional research and assessment of natural hazards; two awards from Philippine presidents, and many more.
