Synopsis
Over more than forty years, Feleo developed a practice rooted in experimentation with form and material, most notably pinalakpak (a sawdust-and-emulsion medium traditionally used by carpenters), tau-tao (three-dimensional human and spirit figures drawn from folk epics), and viriñas (glass domes from the Spanish colonial era used to frame saints and objects of devotion).
Feleo's work brought to life the rich cosmologies of the Bagobo, Bukidnon, and Ifugao peoples, weaving creation myths, ancestral stories, and notions of afterlife and continuity into layered sculptural reliefs and installations. His exhibitions, ranging from the Fukuoka Art Museum's Asian Artists Today (1988) to the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane (1999), and major museum shows at the National Museum of the Philippines and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, mark him as a key contributor to the development of narrative-driven, culturally grounded contemporary art in the region.
